02 / How it works

What actually happens when a helper keeps working

A helper is not a chat window. It’s a colleague with a computer of its own. This page explains what that computer is, which Grok this is, the five things worth knowing, and one morning start to finish.

The basics

What it is

Think of it as hiring an assistant rather than using an app.

You create a helper for one job — sorting your inbox, keeping expenses tidy, chasing job applicants. You log it into the accounts it needs, the same way you’d give a new colleague access on their first day.

Then you message it like you’d text a coworker, and it goes and does the work.

The work happens on a computer in the cloud, always on, not on your laptop. It opens websites and clicks through them exactly like a person would, including the clunky old systems that never work with anything else.

All the helpers on your account share that one computer, so they can hand jobs off — they aren’t separate locked rooms. It comes back when the job is finished, or when it needs you to decide something. You can have several running at once, each on a different job.

These aren’t chatbots you keep prompting. They keep going when your laptop is shut.

  1. You give it

    • “Keep an eye on this inbox.”
  2. It

    • opens the account
    • checks the messages
    • does the repetitive work
  3. It returns when

    • something is done
    • or a decision is needed

Work

Grok Bot

Best for finishing jobs

Use when you want helpers that do work inside your own accounts, on a cloud computer that stays on around the clock.

Five things to know

How it works, in five

  1. 01

It works on a cloud computer

Always switched on, out in the cloud. It stays logged into your accounts between jobs, so it picks up where it left off instead of starting cold. Every helper on your account shares that computer, and each one gets its own screen on it.

  2. 02

    You show it once

Rather than setting anything up, you do the job yourself one time while it watches. It remembers the steps and does it on its own from then on.

  3. 03

    It runs on a schedule

Every weekday at seven, or whenever a certain kind of email lands. You can look back at what it did on any given day.

  4. 04

    It learns your way

It picks up how you write, your usual exceptions, who signs off on what, and when to interrupt you versus carry on quietly.

  5. 05

    They work together

Put a few helpers in one chat and they hand jobs between themselves, with one of them keeping the others on track. You step in for the real decisions. You can also connect X, so a helper can search posts, read your timeline and check mentions. Paid users get some free X API credits to start.

An example

A morning, start to finish

One helper looking after customer emails.

  1. You ask

    01 · The job

“Check the support inbox every morning and write the replies. Don’t send anything — leave them for me.”

  2. Once

    02 · Getting in

You log it into the support account once, on its computer. It only ever reaches the accounts you’ve signed it into.

  3. 06:00

    03 · Overnight

At six it reads the new messages, looks up what was said last time, checks the help pages, and writes each reply the way you would.

  4. Morning

    04 · The handover

A short summary, the drafts waiting for a quick read, and nothing at all on quiet days. Your edits become how it writes tomorrow.
